Declarations: Black Americans and the Revolutionary War

VPM’s “Declarations: Black Americans and The Revolutionary War” is a film in partnership with PBS and directed by Stacey Holman that explores the heroic stories of Black Americans who fought to define life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness through the Revolutionary War. The film follows four forgotten Black foremothers and forefathers, such as James Lafayette, who served as a double agent to defeat the British at Yorktown; Harry Washington, who was enslaved by George Washington and escaped Mount Vernon to join the British Troops; Elizabeth “Mum Bett” Freeman, who sued for her emancipation in Massachusetts; and Abraham Peyton Skipwith who became the first known Black homeowner in Jackson Ward.

The film features Co-Founders of The JXN Project, Dr. Sesha Joi Moon and Enjoli Moon, whose research on Skipwith and Jackson Ward served as the genesis for the film.
