Eatonville Rising: Sacred Ground and Storied Eyes—A Celebration of Two American Milestones, is a six-event series of cultural heritage tourism programs taking place in Eatonville and throughout Orange County, Florida during August and September 2027. The series commemorates the 140th anniversary of Historic Eatonville, Florida, popularized by global literary icon Zora Neale Hurston as the first incorporated African American municipality in the United States, and the 90th anniversary of Hurston’s seminal classic novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God. Eatonville Rising celebrates heritage, preservation, and community. It is presented by Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community, Inc. (P.E.C.) and funded in part by Orange County Government through the Arts & Cultural Affairs Program.
